BAGUIO |
|
The Summer Capital of the Philippines,
cool at 1,524
meters above
sea level; the
Kennon
Road, a 1903
engineering
feat employing
international
labor force
of Filipinos,
Chinese, Indians,
and Japanese
immigrants;
this 21.35 miles
of zigzag road
is a monument
to over 500
Japanese who
lost their lives
during construction
of the road.
Baguio’s
climate is constant
at 10-15 degrees
celsius, an
ideal recuperating
climate for
those suffering
from tropical
heat. The rest
& recreation
retreat of Americans
in their heydays,
is now, a bustling
city of pines,
cosmopolitan
residents, and
haven for local
visitors &
tourists; a
modern city
of cool activity.

VIGAN |
|
Another UNESCO world heritage
site; a place
where time stood
still. Vigan’s
more than 180
ancestral houses
of the 18th
and 19th centuries
was designed
according to
“La ley
de los Indias”-
a colonial town
with narrow
cobbled stone
streets and
rows of Hispanic
tropical houses
for shade, locally
called “Mestizo
District”
or Kasanglayan
(Chinese District)
since the district
was dominated
by rich Chinese
merchants in
early days.
Vigan is 408
kilometers from
Manila, an 8
hour leisure
drive along
the well paved
highway in the
midst of rice,
tobacco, corn,
spring onion,
sugar cane,
garlic and myriad
farms.

PUERTO GALERA |
|
In the days
of the galleon
trade, Puerto
Galera’s
fine harbor
and coves was
the safest place
to dock. It
was the center
of galleon (nao
de china) building.
The town of
Naujan where
the timbers
are gathered
and the “nao”
shell are build
got its name
from the galleon,
unfi-
nished nao are
then sent to
Puerto Galera
for completion.
The sails are
made from “abel”
Cloths of the
Ilocanos. Puerto
Galera is now
a haven of tourist
resorts and
is popular for
fine white beaches
and rich marine
life, truly
a divers paradise
and a beachcombers
rustic

CLARK/ANGELES |
|
The former Fort
Stotsenberg
named after
Col. John Miller
Stotsenberg
of the 1st Nebraska
Volunteers Regiment,
did not have
an airfield
until 1912 when
the Philippine
Air School was
established;
construction
of the runway
began in 1919
which eventually
named Clarkfield
in honor of
Major Harold
M.Clark. Fort
Stotsenberg
and Clarkfield
co-existed for
a while. It
remains the
home of American
Cavalry including
the 26th Cavalry
Philippine Scouts.
Shortly after
the end of WW2,
it was renamed
Clark Air Force
Base, the biggest
American airdome
west of Hawaii.
Today, Clark
is a bustling
economic zone
of multinational
investors with
modern facilities
and international
airport.
